Is Your Own Heating System Damaging Your Skin Indoors during Cold Wheaters?

Do you notice dry skin? More pimples have appeared on your face? Does your skin itch more in autumn than in summer? Behind this increase in skin problems are cold, your heating system, and the change of season. These factors can also aggravate some dermatological diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

As you can see, you can use all the sunscreen you want but the improper maintenance of the heating equipment in your home can be affecting your skin in ways that you cannot imagine. We recently invited a Local gas engineer who explained us things to us that we did not know about our heating system and that led us to write this guide.

Nowadays it is especially important to take into account the effects on the skin of our heating systems, since, at present; two factors are added that can affect it, which are the masks and the hydroalcoholic gel.

In fact, its use can cause certain discomfort in people suffering from psoriasis or atopic dermatitis. That is why we must value the incorporation of new routines for the face and hands and take care of the skin now more than ever.

Is all this taking its toll on your skin? Attention because we give you the keys to avoid it.

What makes psoriasis and atopic dermatitis worse?

Cold, heating and seasonal changes can have a detrimental effect on the skin, especially in those who have skin diseases, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and acne.

When we change the season, for example from summer to autumn, it is common to notice dry skin. In some cases, this increased dryness leads to the deterioration of the skin structure and the protective function it exerts on the body against external aggressions.

Psoriasis: what it is and how it influences the cold

It is a chronic skin disease that causes the appearance of scabs and scaly plaques, of different sizes, on the elbows, knees, and hands, although they can also develop on the scalp or in other areas. Also, these lesions are itchy and painful and even bleed.

This pathology is aggravated when it is cold, and the symptoms intensify. Dermatologists point out that “psoriasis only improves in the spring months and, especially, in summer, thanks to the effects of a greater exposure to ultraviolet rays”.

Atopic dermatitis and cold

Low temperatures can cause the appearance of atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis causes:

• itching

• inflammation or swelling

• frequent redness

Healthy lifestyle and good heating systems, allies for your skin

Against the cold, what can we do to protect the skin? Follow healthy habits. In this way, a better quality of life will be achieved for those affected by these skin pathologies. Specifically, our dermatologists highlight these guidelines:

• Keep stress under control

• Say goodbye to tobacco and alcohol

• Play sports regularly

• Make sure heating systems are working properly

• Eat a balanced diet

• Hydrate yourself, it is advisable to drink 2-3 liters of water every day.

The importance of the good use of Sunscreen

Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause serious skin problems, so it is very important to know the risks related to solar radiation, as well as the proper use of sunscreen, at a time when temperatures are high, and more dangerous radiation.

In this sense, the scientists maintain that “the human being needs to be exposed to the sun, because it generates benefits for the skin such as the synthesis of vitamin D. However, prolonged exposure and in hours when solar radiation is higher, will cause damage because in the solar spectrum we have ultraviolet radiation, which is very energetic radiation, therefore it is really dangerous. If we did not have the ozone layer, the existence of life on earth would be seriously compromised.”.

Regarding ultraviolet radiation and its ability to cause skin burns, the academic maintains that for many years bronzers were misused as sun protection cosmetics, which although they protected from short-wave rays (UVB), they let through the longwave rays (UVA), which, being less energetic, reached a deeper level in the skin, reaching the dermis, achieving a tanned tone.

However, according to experts, “with the advancement of cosmetic science, it began to be understood that this long-wavelength (UVA) also had such a deep penetration into the skin that when it reached the living skin cells, it was responsible for the photo-aging process, but even more serious, it caused alterations in DNA, which was one of the causes of skin cancer”.

The professors add that because of this today “we are not talking about tanning but sunscreen. It is necessary to protect the skin from both UVA and UVB radiation, to avoid changes or mutations in the cells and try to protect ourselves against skin cancer and photo-aging.”
